Reference Magnets
 

Several permanent-magnet types are available from F W. Bell. These magnets are designed expressly for the checking of Hall-Effect sensing elements. Each magnet is marked with the value of flux density, in gauss, as measured by an EW. Bell Hall Sensor.

All reference magnets of 3,000 gauss and lower are heavily shielded. The measurement gaps are centrally located in symmetrical structures. They have very low external (stray) fields and are well shielded from the effects of outside magnetic fields. The calibration of these magnets is not affected by exposure to external fields of up to 10% of the calibration value, although the reading may be affected during the period of exposure. Magnets of 10,000 gauss and higher use a large C-shaped magnet. Because of the relatively small air gap, the external stray field from the C structure is low, although it is higher than from the enclosed type of magnet. The gap opening may be sealed with tape when not in use to prevent metal particles from lodging between the poles due to the high magnetic attraction.
